The Effects of Language Intervention with the Pretend-play to Improve Expressive Language of the Children with Mental Retardation

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of language intervention with the pretend-play to children with mental retardation in their expressive language. The object was to increase the frequency of 2-word construction of speech production. A multiple probe design across subjects was utilized. The intervention lasted for 40 minutes, and practiced 3 times a week. The pretend-play program consisted of two situations. one was ¡¯daily play¡¯, and the other was ¡¯hospital play¡¯. The intervention of each session was evaluated by the pretend-play program and the results were recorded in percentage. The hospital-play was activated after intervention of the daily-play attained their goal. The results were as follows; Firstly, language intervention with the daily-play program was effective to increase the frequency of 2-word construction of speech to the children with mental retardation. Secondly, language intervention with the hospital-play program was effective to increase the frequency of 2-word construction of speech to the children with mental retardation. Thirdly, language intervention with the pretend-play program increased the frequency of 2-word construction of spontaneous speech and decreased the frequency of 2-word construction of demanded speech to the children with mental retardation.
